What is a Colon Cleanse?
Have you ever considered a colon cleanse? This article describes the benefits of a colon cleanse, the differents ways in which you can cleanse your colon such as with colon hydrotherapy and the colon cleanse products I have personally used and recommend!
I’ll even tell you in great detail about my experience with open colon hydrotherapy, you want to read this, trust me! So let’s get started!
What Does Your Colon Do?
To understand why you may want a colon cleanse you must first understand what your colon does. Your colon is part of your digestive system and wraps itself in a upside U-shape around your small intestines. It is composed of 4 parts and is the 4th organ involved in the 5 step process of breaking down your food.
Imagine eating a slice of pizza. By time what’s left of it gets to your colon, it has been ground to pieces by your teeth, doused with gastric juices and pureed by your stomach, baptized again with liver, pancreatic, and gallbladder juices in the small intestines, and any nutrients and vitamins have been sucked out of it (let’s assume it’s a cauliflower pizza ;)).
When that slice of pizza hits your colon, all that’s left is waste, most of which is water, which your colon quickly absorbs. Your colon contains natural bacteria which even further decomposes the waste. From there, it’s off to your rectum and anus and you happily dispose the waste on your daily trips to the toilet. What are the benefits of a colon cleanse?
Sounds good, you say, but why do I need to cleanse my colon? There are two different camps when it comes to colon cleanse benefits. These two camps are the medical profession and the naturalists.
The Medical Profession’s Viewpoint:
Most medical professionals would probably tell you that colon cleanses are not necessary and that the body naturally cleanses itself. They might even tell you of side effects such as nausea, vomiting, bloating, and cramping and warn you that more serious effects can happen. These include possible infection and dehydration risks, bowel perforation, and electrolyte changes.
The Naturalists’ Viewpoint:
If you conduct your own research you will discover that there are millions of people throughout history who believed in the practice of colon cleansing. Colon cleanse is NOT a new concept, in fact we have documentation from 1500 B.C. from the ancient Egytians doctors who used this method! That’s over 3000 years ago!
Proponents of colon cleansing encourage it, because they believe toxins build up in your colon and cause issues such as allergies, arthritis, asthma, constipation, gastrointestinal and chronic disease. A medical doctor, Dr. John H. Kellogg, treated an anstounding 40,000 patients with gastrointestinal disease. He published his findings in the Journal of the Medical Health Association and reported that he prescribed all his patients three things: colon cleansing, a good diet, and exercise. Out of all those patients only 20 needed to have surgery!
Another proponent of colon cleansing, Dr. James Wilstie stated that in general the colon has been ignored in the medical profession, and that little is known of it’s normal and abnormal function and the cause and effects of disease in the colon. (Source: InnerSpa)
To summarize, those in the medical profession argue that there is no benefit to a colon cleanse but refuse to explore colon health in this way. Naturalists continue to utilize it, documenting thousands of cases where patients have regained their energy and vitality.
Is a colon cleanse a good idea?
The reason many people decide to cleanse their colon is because their gastrointestinal system is not working correctly. Do you know that over 42 million people in the U.S. have chronic constipation? And that up to 20% of people in the world have irritable bowel syndrome? Now you might understand why you would do your best to regain your gut health.
You may want to consider a colon cleanse if you have these following symptoms:
- feeling tired all the time
- pain in your stomach
- little or no energy
- “brain fog”
- bad breath
- joints are hurting and stiff
When your colon is not functioning properly and you are not having regular bowel movements, mucus and bacteria flourish in your colon. Because the waste in your colon isn’t being eliminated, your body may eventually filter these toxins back into your bloodstream. Future risks include your body not properly absorbing the nutrients it takes in. (Source: Dr Axe)
Why I Decided to Do a Colon Cleanse
I’ve struggled with gut problems all my life. Even conferred with several doctors, one of whom said it sounded like I have IBS. I know for myself that I probably have a lot of these issues because of my poor diet. I consume way too much caffeine, love my coffee! and I probably drink maybe 2 glasses of water a day on average. It doesn’t take a brain scientist to figure out that that’s asking for constipation and a sluggish gastrointestinal system. I also love sugar and consume way too much candy, sweets, Starbuck lemon loaf, you name it. P.s. There’s a reason I crave all that sugar so keep an eye out for a future article on this, if you have the same issue!
Anyways I was tired of struggling with feeling and looking bloated all time, gassiness, and not having regular bowel movements. Meanwhile my hubby can poop on command, ugh. Cancer runs in my family, specifically stomach and uterine cancer so I was beside myself with anxiety that I would get it. So I decided I needed to kickstart my gut health by getting a colon cleanse.
Types of Colon Hydrotherapy
When I started my research I quickly found out that there are two types of colon hydrotherapy, open and closed. The area where I lived had practitioners that used either so it was my job to figure out which one I wanted to try. Here is a basic comparison of open colon hydrotherapy and closed colon hydrotherapy:
- The water used for the procedure is gravity fed.
- Only 1 inch of the rectal tube is inserted in the rectum.
- You can release the waste whenever you feel the need to poop.
- No matter the size of the poop, it will flow freely when you push.
- A large tubing system beside you allow you to see exactly what is coming out.
- You are given instructions and do the procedure by yourself.
- The water is actually pressurized up to 2 psi.
- 5 inches of the rectal tube is inserted in the rectum.
- Your poop has to fit inside the 1 in wide tube.
- A therapist is with you at all times and you need to tell her when you need to evacuate your bowels.
- There is only a tiny window to view the waste being passed.
I was instantly attracted to the open colon hydrotherapy procedure because I was so uncomfortable at the thought of pooping with someone present. I don’t even do that with my husband! Also I had just watched a documentary on someone who did the closed hydrotherapy and it looked painful. When I discovered that it was also 20-30 dollars cheaper than closed hydrotherapy, that was my go for it sign.
The Colon Hydrotherapy Process
I decided to schedule an appointment at the practitioner that sounded most attractive to me. I soon learned though, that my health had to be cleared before I could even schedule an appointment! Texas requires that practitioners have their patients cleared by a medical doctor first. I was relieve to hear that I didn’t have to schedule a separate appointment with a random doctor.
Instead, I paid $45 and the office sent me papework via email for me to fill out. I was quizzed on whether I had any hemorrhoids, cancer, was anemic, or had had a serious gastrointestinal surgery. I forget all the questions but it was a general bill of health form. It was so specific I wondered how the average person would even pass! After I completed the paperwork, I sent it back and was approved within 24 hours.
Once I was approved I was sent additional instructions. I was told to be sure and drink a lot of water in the 24 hours prior to my appointment and to make sure the last meal I had was about 4 hours before the procedure. I was also not to drink any coffee, avoid spicy foods, and eats lots of veggies.
I did a little research and learned that there are many ways in which you can prepare your body to ensure the colon cleanse is a success. These include juicing, avoiding foods that cause gas, no smoking or coffee, chewing your food thoroughly, and besides drinking water, drinking peppermint, chamomile, and other herbal teas. Here is an excellent article that breaks down these steps for you.
I will admit that I failed thoroughly at preparing my body for the colon cleanse. It was the typical chaos of life getting in the way and the fact that I hated to drink water and loved my coffee. Be unprepared is one of the worst things you can do as you will find out!
The day of my appointment finally arrived and boy was I excited. What I wasn’t excited about was the fact that I had to drive 40 minutes in heavy downtown traffic. Being new to the area, I ended up getting turned around like twice and was 15 minutes late to my appointment. I called ahead and let them know, but by the time I arrived I was so tense and stressed it was ridiculous. Strike 2 against having a successful colon cleanse experience.
The center itself was in a tall office building on the 3rd floor. It was a much smaller office space than I had imagined and it was decorated in the usual ambient style of health and wellness offices. Two other ladies were waiting in the waiting area with me and we soon struck up a conversation. I soon learned that the one of the ladies came here for regular colon cleanses and she happily described how much better she felt after each one. The other lady and I were both skeptical and scared.
As we waited I was acutely aware of how freaking thirsty I was, but I couldn’t make myself ask for some water. Strike 3. Finally, the patient before me on who we were waiting on came out with a smile on her face. We were all giggling teenagers as we asked her to describe her experience. There is something about the fact that everyone poops that just made our conversations hilarious. Then it was my turn and with good luck! ringing in my ears I went back to the colon cleanse room, praying I would survive.
The colon hydrotherapy room was just a small room, decorated with a hilarious poster that said “Get that shit out!” What caught my attention immediately was the gianormous tubing system complete with valves regulating the pressure and temperature of the water. There was even an emergency shut off valve.
Directly by it was THE TABLE. I call it THE TABLE because as soon as you saw it you knew shit was going to get serious. For realz. It was made completely out of tan plastic with a small pillow for your head on one end and on the the other, the rectal tube of fear. I was definitely apprehensive when I saw it because I wasn’t sure if they would attach another apparatus to it because it didn’t look as if it would work.
The therapist came in then and explained the procedure. She describe how the valves work and show me how to regulate how much water I wanted flowing into my colon and how to adjust the warmth and pressure. Then she proceeded to whip out the actual rectal tube. I would say from end to end it was probably about 10 inches long and bent on one end.
To my pleasant surprise and relief she stated that only 1 inch had to be inserted. She then left the room and I put on my hospital gown and proceeded to do the thing. Everything was in sterile packaging and there was even gloves for me to use and alcoholic wipes to clean with.
I discovered that it was actually pretty comfortable as they had a place to rest your legs. After getting situated I pushed the call button for the therapist to come back.
Let me tell you there’s nothing as feeling inferior when you are lying there with a rectal tube in your butt while the therapist is having a serious discussion with you. Thank God I’ve experienced the shamelessness of childbirth twice now and could handle the hilariousness of the situation.
As I was lying there the therapist had me perform a colon massage which is simply starting on the right side of your colon and massaging in a circle the entire length of your colon. She explained this was to help loosen up the waste in the colon. She then explained that I needed to let the water flow into my colon until I felt full and wanted to push. Then I was stop the flow and expell the waste. I was also told that I may start feeling nauseous and if so to keep on massaging my stomach. She also show me a stretch that she said helped with the uncomfortableness.
Then she instructed me to start the flow of the water. Let me tell you it felt so weird as I felt the warm water started to flow into my colon and my immediate knee jerk action was to want to push. I was glad that she was there for the 1st round, to make sure that I was doing it right.
With that first push, the only thing that came out was water and some white bubbles, which she said was yeast. I wasn’t surprised as I had recently completed a yeast cleanse and was super excited that this was also ridding my body of yeast. You may be surprised to know that there are over 20 kinds of yeast and that over 70 percent of people have candida, a fungal yeast infection. Subscribe here for my future article on why candida is terrible and how to get rid of it!
Finally I was left on my own with instructions to use the call button if I needed help. Ok ladies, so this is where my sins started to catch up. Remember: I wasn’t hydrated, I was extremely stressed, I had drank coffee that morning, and I hadn’t eaten properly.
As the waste started to come out of my colon I realized that I wasn’t expelling near the amount of poop that I thought I would. I also found it a lot of work to hold the water in and then expell it. About 20 minutes into my 45 session I began cramping up terribly. It was as bad as the worst case of pms cramps I had ever had. I tried to massage, tried to breath evenly, as she had instructed. I hated to give up but after 10 more minutes I gave up. The pain was just too much.
Why Colon Hydrotherapy Didn’t Work For Me
I knew immediately what the problem was. Prior to scheduling my appointment I had called around to various places. I spoke to a practioner who utilized the closed hydrotherapy colonic system. She highly encouraged me to use this system because she said that the advantage of a closed hydrotherapy system is that it completely engulfs and softens the impacted waste in your colon first.
In other words, with the open system I was using, the waste was flushed out when the water reached it during the procedure. This was why I was having such bad cramps because the waste was so impacted and hard, it was painful to remove it.
I immediately drank water after the procedure and spoke to the therapist who was surprised I had stopped. She encouraged me to come back for my second session that week. I agreed to consider it but I knew there was no way I was coming back!
Colon Cleanse Products I Recommend
I decided there had to be an easier way to clean my colon, and after much research I discovered there are over the counter colon cleanses that you can use at home! Here are the two I use on a regular basis and really like.
I found out about Mag 07 when I did J. J. Smith’s 7 day smoothie cleanse. She recommended this product for colon cleansing and to date it’s one of the best buys I have ever made. It’s very gentle, and it works! When I first took it I expected it to work like a laxative with horrible cramping, but I had absolutely none!
Why I also chose this product was because it contains magnesium oxide compounds which releases oxygen into your colon. If you are familar with natural cancer treatments, you know that oxygen is often used to kill cancer cells. So not only was I getting my colon cleansed, I felt as if I was also deterring any cancerous tumors.
Mag 07 brags that it is “ultimate oxygenating Digestive System Cleanse” and I would say that it lives up to its name! Click on the picture below to see the full description of the product. It is very simple to take, only 3 capsules at bedtime and results the next day!
The other colon cleanse product I take on a regular basis is OxyPowder. Instead of magnesium and potassium like the Mag 07, OxyPowder contains magnesium and citric acid. OxyPowder promises to clean your entire colon properly instead of just stimulating harmful colon muscus like other inferior products with low grade ingredients.
It contains oxygen just like the Mag 07 and is Vegan, Gluten-Free, and GMO-Free. Best of all, it was made here in the U.S. so you can be even more assured of its quality! To use this, the recommendation is 4 capsules at bed with purified water. You should only increase the dosage if you do not have 3-5 bowel movements the next day.
To boost your results, you can add lemon juice (1/2 lemon) to your water when drinking your pills. Also be sure and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
I would personally recommend starting with the OxyPowder as I discovered it was more effective than the Mag07. When you first cleanse your colon, you will have a lot of impacted waste and bacteria floating around so you want to do a thorough cleanse. Plus the OxyPowder promise to help with maintaining your electrolyte balance and not destroying the natural flora in your gut.
After a full treatment of OxyPowder I would switch to Mag07 as it is more gentle. I use this whenever I feel like I have excessive bloating and waste buildup.
Does a Colon Cleanse Work?
Here is a the summary of how I felt after using these colon cleanse products. One word: Amazing! Since taking these products, I have lost weight, my stomach has gone down considerably and I no longer have that “bloated cow” look. If you have problems with your gut, you know exactly what I mean.
I feel much more energized and alive. My brain fog has disappeared and I can focus on important things, like writing this article. After reading so many testimonials I can now join the ranks of people who claim that a colon cleanse is one of the best things you can do for your health.
Here are some tips to help you when you take a colon cleanse:
- Drink lots of water-this cannot be overemphasized.
- Try to eat light meals, lots of veggies and soups when you are doing the cleanse.
- Follow the recommended dosage for daily and long term use.
- Do not exceed recommended dosage, too much of a good thing can be harmful.
- Do not use these products as weight lost products, that is just a side benefit if it happens!
- I recommend taking first dosage on the weekend when you can be at home, you will need that toilet!
- After completing a colon cleanse, do a yeast cleanse to get rid of any harmful candida. (Article on Yeast Cleanse coming soon, Follow Me!)
- Enjoy your newfound energy and vitality! (p.s. you might need new clothes!)
I hope you have enjoyed reading this as much as I have enjoyed writing this! When I first started my research on colon hydrotherapy, I never expected that I would have to run out on a session! However, colon hydrotherapy, open and closed, have worked for thousands, so don’t be afraid to try it! If you are a little timid, then start with cleansing your colon at home!
Until next time! Ta! Ta! Mrs. G
