Weekend Recap

Hello world!!! No, I haven’t gone anywhere! I’m still here just plugging away behind the scenes. I decided to do a quick recap on the weekend activities with the kids and I just to get myself and you all caught up!

Saturday’s Activities:

Walking the Puppy

Saturday was definitely our chill out day. After an initial disaster where I burned my first attempt at gluten free pancakes, I spent the morning working on the blog while Miss A amused me immensely with her imagination. As I had mentioned in previous posts she absolutely LOVES dogs. Everywhere we go she will run up and pet a stranger’s dog. It puts fear in this mommy’s heart that she will get bitten someday and I have been doing my best to keep her under control. So far all the dogs have been pretty friendly, thank God!

This is what happens when you waste time on Facebook.
Success!

Anyway’s on Saturday she started dragging my ballet shoe by the long shoe string around, “I’m walking my puppy, Mommy.” It was so cute I could have died. I took a darling video and several pics of her walking the puppy and petting it. Later she insisted the puppy had peed on the carpet so I had her pretend clean it up. This child! I swear I don’t believe in reincarnation but this is as close as it gets. I have pictures and videos of her pretending to be a puppy, crawling on all fours, sniffing and licking stuff, yes gross I know, and also picking things up in her mouth. I guess she figures that if she can’t have a puppy then she’ll BE a puppy. When I tell her she’s a little girl not a puppy, it breaks her heart..”why, Mommy, why?”

We currently live in an apartment and I really don’t want a dog here but now we are seriously considering getting her one for her bday!! There’s a mini Schaunzer our neighbors have that she absolutely loves, so maybe something along those lines or one of those fluffy white hypoallergenic dogs. I absolutely dread the thought of cleaning up puppy poop though, I can’t handle the ick factor and I know I’ll be doing all the hard work! I also never wanted to live with an animal in the house. I’ve always been the type that considers dogs outside animals so really hesistant about all this.

Planting Springtime Lettuce

We finally got around to planting the lettuce seeds we had purchased the day we set up the mini garden on my deck/patio. What spurred this activity was when Miss A dumped the entire packet of seeds in a metal pail. So Master A got busy pouring the potted soil into the container and I showed him how to plant the seedlings and cover with light soil. When planting lettuce, the seeds are so delicate you don’t want to put too heavy of a soil cover on them or they will smother. What was encouraging is that we discovered that the seeds had already begun to sprout from the packet getting soaked by the rain. I thought that this is actually a good idea to use in the future. Soak the seeds in a small amount of water so that they sprout and you know you aren’t wasting your time. Nothing is more discouraging than putting in a lot of hard work for seeds that don’t grow!

Movie Time-Sherlock Gnomes Review

Sherlock Gnomes, a cute kid’s movie, was playing this weekend so I decided to take the kiddos to see it. Watching the trailer, it depicted garden gnomes, two of whom are Sherlock Gnomes and Dr. Watson. I’ve been an avid lover of Conan O’Doyles mysteries from a small girl so was keen on seeing how this movie played out. At the same time I wanted my kiddos to fall in love with the characters as I did.

I did a little research and discover a newer much nicer theater that was even closer to us than the one we previously went to. Upon arriving I was delighted to discover that it was a movie haven, complete with the usual popcorn, candy, and sugary drinks. However, this theater also boasted a cafe with other yummy food, a Starbucks, and an arcade area to keep you entertained if arriving early. We decided on a chicken strip basket with fries swimming in bacon and cheese, some zen tea (I had a headache), and off we went to our seats. P.s. They were super nice, all leather, reclining, and complete with appropriate tray tables.

Now for my review on the Sherlock Gnomes movie. Overall it was quite cute, and although a kid’s cartoon, I felt as if the creators really stuck to the identity of the characters as presented in the books. The characters were funny and smart, and the movie moved quickly enough to keep even Miss A entertained. However, I was very disappointed in how one of the gnomes was presented. The producers had a little character dressed in a red mankini? I ‘m sure what the term is, but basically walking around with its buns out and then dancing inappropriately. He also wore lipstick. I was very disturbed by this as I felt an adult theme such as this should not be included in a kid’s movie. And it wasn’t just a momentary scene and you saw him once. The producers made a point to focus on him, for the funny factor, and he was seen several times throughtout the movie. I was glad Miss A was too young to understand and I intend to address this with Master A to get his feedback on it. So my overall score of this movie would be a 7/10 which is a shame.

Getting Close with Nature

After the movie, the kids relaxed, I think Miss A actually took a bath, and I ended up having quite an intriguing conversation with a friend of mine. Good things are brewing, people.

We got antsy again towards evening and decided to go check out another of our favorite parks we hadn’t been to in a while. This park is perfect if you’re feeling in the naturey mood. It’s actually a memorial for veterans and it’s encased in beautiful tall trees mostly pine. The crunch of the pine needles underfoot remind me so much of Belizean vegetation and it’s so peaceful to sit on the benches, look up, and admire the halo created by the treetops. The kiddos made use of the playset and I actually swung for a bit. We headed back when the mosquitoes began swarming us but not be admiring the moon peeking through the treetops.

Back home Master A worked on putting together this awesome ladder bookshelf I found, but more details on that later. P.s. I love having a little handyman around. I tell him I’m preparing him for the workforce. He doesn’t find it funny, insert mom joke here.

Sunday Activities:

Ok, so you know how I said Saturday was our chill out day? Just realize not true at all. Definitely Sunday. We didn’t do much, except post a couple stuff for sale on OfferUp and FB sales sites, watch shows, and play outside. We did make another trip to Aldis where I grabbed under awesome bookshelf because I liked them so much.  I also finally made up my mind on the setup of my living room and picked up a cheaper desk for the TV. By now Master A and I are both experts at assembling Ikea style furniture. After our hard work, we celebrated by having a spontaneous movie night (usually Fridays) and then tumbled exhausted into our beds. Well, that’s all folks, laters! Sincerely, Mrs. G

  • Good for you teaching them to plant stuff! M,y 4 year old has her basil and beans plants that she’s responsable for! Also, you know those plastic shallow containers that lettuce comes in? We found that those work better for us for planting lettuce, cause lettuce doesn’t need a lot of dirt (that’s why they sprouted in the package) and it does need good drainage… good luck!

    • wow what a great idea!!! will have to try that later! I think it’s so cute your four year old has her own plants! 🙂

  • Sounds like y’all had a good weekend! I love theaters with reclining seats. Thanks for the info about the movie – I am not looking forward to when my little gets older and have to screen everything for that reason. I’m also not looking forward to explaining everything! The struggle is real.

    • I know, it’s absolutely ridiculous that we can no longer trust a rating but have to screen everything ourselves, signs of the times, I’m afraid.
